SUHI...CIF CHAMPS!
The Sweetwater Red Devil Varsity football team did it. They actually did it. They won CIF! They beat Monte Vista High School 7 to 0 for the Division 4 CIF Championship at Mesa College Stadium on December 7, 2013. What a game it was!
Rest In Peace.....Rudy Hernandez
He was a hero of the Korean War, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. The son of migrant farm workers who could not find a job, joined the Army at the age of 17. He became a paratrooper. He was a member of Company G of the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. His unit was attacked by artillery about 2 a.m. on May 31, 1951. Hernandez, single-handedly carried out a bayonet assault on the enemy. Although severely wounded, he fixed his bayonet to his damaged, useless rifle, threw six grenades at the North Koreans, then charged out of his foxhole, shouting, "Here I come!" Hernandez stabbed six enemy soldiers to death with his bayonet. His one-man assault caused the North Koreans to retreat and allowed his Army unit time to regroup and launch a counterattack. He was injured all over his body from grenades, bullets and artillery shrapnel. He collapsed on the battlefield. His body was found the next morning, bloody and muddy, surrounded by the corpses of the enemy troops he had killed. He had bayonet wounds in his back and through his lower lip. He had lost most of his front teeth. He appeared to be lifeless there on the ground. Then a medic noticed some movement in his hands. He was evacuated. He did not regain consciousness for a month.
He was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman in the White House Rose Garden on April 12, 1952. I, personally do not take Corporal Hernandez' actions lightly. He is a true war hero. He is among the valiant. He passed away 7 days ago, in Fayetteville, NC. He was 82. Rest in peace, Rudy.

Yes......People Disagree
People disagree all the time. Am I obligated to agree with every lifestyle? No. However, I refuse to be unkind. I refuse to call people rude names. Some people are wordsmiths. Some people have high level formal educations with advanced degrees, however, they tend to explode if someone refuses to agree with them. They demonstrate an arrogance that screams out: "How dare you disagree with me, don't you know that I am sophisticated and you are not? Don't you know that I am educated and you are not? Don't you know that the time has come to be tolerant?" (except I don't need to be tolerant, only you need to be)
"Family Planning" Is An Oxymoron
Family planning is a "buzz term" for abortion. "Family planning" is not really about family planning. It is about ending the lives of the unborn. Due to the fact that killing babies is detestable and grotesque business, it is not in the best interests of those providing this "service" to be honest about what they are doing. The term "family planning" does not even reach the label of being a euphemism, because at least a euphemism has a similarity. Abortion is family destruction, not family planning. This is why "family planning" is an oxymoron. Is not a baby born into a family? How can it be born into a family if it is not even given a chance to be born.

Name-Calling Is A Substitute
Name-calling is a substitute. It is a place of refuge for those who have neither enough information or adequate communication skills to express themselves. Many people use their computers not only to express themselves but also to relieve themselves.......of their anger, frustrations, jealousy, regret for not pursuing a higher education, unhappiness because they are poor, not famous, have bad health, need their teeth fixed, can't get a date, not cool, too young, too old and a host of other problems all of which have solutions. But, they prefer substitutes. Personally, I do not want substitutes. I want the real deal. Calling people unkind names is not the real deal. It never has been, it never will be.

Who Is Responsible?
How can you run a business if people are not held accountable for what they do? How can you manage or administer an organization if people are not held responsible for what they do? Educational institutions, local, state and national governments, their agencies and departments, the military, law enforcement.............who is accountable? How can you solve problems if people refuse to be responsible for what happens? One might say: "society is responsible." No, no, no. People who run it, are in it, act in it, prosper in it, and benefit from it are responsible. Some more than others. "Share the blame"? Be careful with that one. If that is the case, then everyone belongs in prison. And no, not everyone belongs in prison.
Get Real
The pursuit of image in some men prohibits them from truly enjoying life. It prohibits them from finding a purposeful meaning in life. I say seek truth. I say seek what really is. I say seek something solid....something that lasts, and really matters. I say seek something genuine. Phoniness stands out like a sore thumb. Don't be pretentious. Get real. Seek the truth. Don't worry about what people think. If you get hung up on that, it will ruin your life. Get real.

A Chance To Be Kind
Kindness is important. Because of it, many problems are avoided. Conflicts are avoided. Confusion can be avoided. We really should make every effort to be kind. Let us do what we can. Help that person out. Assist, accompany, attend to, fill in, do a favor. I remember a plane trip I was on, about 10 years ago. We were just about to depart from Houston to San Diego. A married couple entered the airplane. They wanted to sit together. There were no empty seats that were together, so they sat separately. There were three seats on my row. I had an aisle seat, and there was one empty seat next to me. The woman sat next to me. I asked her: "would you like me to trade seats with your husband?" "Of course. Would you really do that!" "Sure, no problem." They were both elated. They both thanked me. What I did was very little, but it was sure appreciated. Their satisfaction was my reward. This happened during late November. A man watched what I did. He said: "The Christmas spirit is already here and it is still November." Like I said, I do not consider what I did a big deal. I am no hero. It was just a chance to be kind.

The Blessings Of Faith
We make choices. Some of those choices are advantageous, some are not. It is a wise choice to have faith in God and His Word. Some may say that faith is not a choice but that it is something that is already pre-ordained by forces greater than ourselves. Some may say: "Don't talk to me about God, I would rather talk about my vacation or my new house." However it works out, is not faith a choice? Faith has certain requirements. I am convinced that in order to acquire faith, one must hear the Word of God. This is where faith comes from. It comes from the Word of God. Some want to hear. Some do not. Things happen to one who has faith. His/her life begins to develop a certain quality that cannot be compared to anything else. One begins to feel secure and safe. One begins to believe that everything is going to be fine. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." (Heb. 11:1) "The substance of things hoped for"? "The evidence of things not seen"? Blessings come when you believe. What if you pray, and your prayers are answered? If you hope for things......then you pray. You receive. Do you want something? Ask God for it. Do it humbly, boldly...... but with faith. "But without faith it is impossible to please God." (Heb. 11:6) Exercise your faith. And I do not mean exercise your religion or organization! I mean exercise your faith. "You people are too weird," she said. Without being sarcastic, I responded, "Where did the air you are breathing come from? Who created the ability for you to think and come up with ideas such as the one you have just shared? Why are we here? Do you have a better response for the purpose of life than to honor God and obey His word"? She was willing to talk and listen but she did not answer any of the questions I asked her. I did not pressure her. She was a young woman who was not happy, but she wanted to be. Basically, all it takes is faith. But here is the clincher: It must be faith in Jesus Christ. If it is not faith in Him, you do not reach God. Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man comes unto the Father but by me." (John 14:6) Notice Jesus said "comes," he did not say "goes." There is much more. Enjoy. Enjoy the blessings of faith.

Almighty God we thank you for allowing us to be here today. We thank you for the hard work and devotion of these football players. All have endured pain and sacrifice. They are living proof of what hard work can bring. They have done it for the love of this game and respect for their school. We thank you for their coaches, families and friends. We thank you for all that have supported them in this endeavor. They have come a long way. This team has brought honor to Sweetwater High School, National City, and to the communities of South Bay. And they continue to represent themselves, their coaches, their families, their school, and their community. We humbly come before you and ask your blessing upon us here. Bless all persons connected to this team. Bless all starters and non-starters, all are important, we are a team. We ask that you inspire and motivate every player on this team to do his very best in every facet of competitive high school football. That they may compete with an intensity, focus and skill that is superior to all the games behind us, which are now history. Place a fire in the hearts of these players. Give the coaches guidance and wisdom. Protect all from accidents and injuries. That they may play their "A" game on offense, defense, and special teams! Thank you.

Rude Comments
Unfortunately, ignorant comments/people are not going away. Knowing how to deal with them is a life skill. A smile, a kind gesture is usually welcomed by all. However, some people have not been taught to be kind/courteous/wise and positive conversationalists. It is not in them. The reality is that we need to win. By that, I mean civility and wisdom need to win, even if it means a red face. Yes, it is a battle, but it is a battle that can only be won by not being the same as the offender. It is a different type of warfare. It basically boils down to this: the contest between the civilized and the uncivilized. Humility is superior to arrogance. "I am so proud and smart, and I can say anything I want." No. Absolutely not.

Vices Are Not Crimes?
"Vices are not crimes," is a quote by Lysander Spooner. Spooner was a political theorist, activist and abolitionist. He was outspoken during the American Civil War. There is a problem with semantics here. Vices cause crimes. And yes, I truly believe in freedom. Are vices crimes? What if your "vice" is touching little girls inappropriately. What if your "vice" is that you have an obsessive desire to steal, so you steal. What if your "vice" is that you like to drive a vehicle while you are drunk? How does one differentiate between a vice and a bad habit that also happens to be against the law. What if my "vice" truly harms others? Oddly enough, I might find myself agreeing with Mr. Spooner, if I were able to understand his context.

Poem In November: By Lucas Dominguez
The following poem was written by Lucas Dominguez in the month of November of 1994 when he was in the 8th grade at Bonita Vista Middle School. It is entitled: "What I Am Thankful For." There is irony in this poem, it is in the last line. "But the thing I'm most thankful for is that I'm alive." On Thanksgiving Day, November 24th, 1994, Lucas was in a terrible automobile accident, while with his family, about 90 miles from Phoenix, Arizona. I too, was in the van. It was demolished. It landed on top of Lucas. This poem was written about one week before the accident took place.

A Thanksgiving Day Proclamation

A Proclamation.
The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. My Letter To The Washington Post About Lincoln
Today, I wrote a letter to the Washington Post in reference to an article written on Tuesday November 19, 2013, the day of the 150th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. It was entitled: "The Road To America Leads Through Gettysburg." It was written by Nancy F. Koehn. She gave honor to the speech delivered by Lincoln 150 years ago. So do I. I honor the memory of Abraham Lincoln because I consider him the greatest President this country has ever had. There is a reason for this, and the reason is stated in my letter to the Washington Post, below:
I am convinced that the Gettysburg Address is one of the greatest speeches ever made by anybody. However, I would also like to emphasize the fact that Abraham Lincoln was a great orator without having much formal education. Every speech he ever made contained a reference to God or a quote from the Bible. The letters he wrote to friends and colleagues contained the quotes and references as well. Simply stated: he was a "Bible man." I am convinced that this is what made him wise, patient, kind and with a great sense of humor. Lincoln was "full of the Word." During his early childhood, it was the only book (s) to which he had access. He learned to read from the Bible. Unjust Laws
I am of the opinion that if an unjust law exists, it needs to be removed, and it needs to be removed speedily. There are those before me, who were much more knowledgeable than I, who have influenced my thinking. The fact is that laws are made by men, therefore, they must have flaws. The flaws must be corrected because they represent the possibility, or perhaps the guarantee, of injustice. In no way does this necessarily mean that I have disrespect for law. Is not the purpose of law to execute justice? Is not the purpose of law to help people be safe and enjoy peace? Who can argue with those goals? Have A Great Conversation....Ask Questions
Obviously, it is practically impossible to have a meaningful conversation with someone without asking questions. Granted, some people ask too many questions. Some people are nosy. Others are genuinely interested in how and/or what you are doing. It takes wisdom to ask the right questions. Not everyone we know is a "people person." It does not mean that they are hateful or rude. Sometimes they are shy. Sometimes they are too proud to make a mistake, so they say nothing. Sometimes they do not know very much, and are afraid to engage someone in a conversation. That last group can use their lack of knowledge to ask questions and learn something while gaining an opportunity to enjoy a pleasant conversation. It is my view that there are many, things of interest in this world. But the most interesting "things" are human beings. They can truly enrich you, and you can enrich them. Have a great conversation. Don't forget to ask some good questions. If you want to take it to a higher level, be sure to love the person with whom you are talking.

Fran Tarkenton
Fran Tarkenton played in the NFL for 18 seasons. He was not physically big but he was aggressive. He played for the Minnesota Vikings. I consider him the greatest quarterback to ever step on a football field but most fans do not agree with me. Tarkenton still tops the record books for rushing yards by a quarterback. He also leads in passing completions, touchdowns, and passing yardage. He played in 9 Pro Bowls. He was voted the NFL MVP one time. I am convinced that the main reason he is not considered the greatest quarterback is because he never won a Super Bowl. In the end I think the judgment is fair due to the fact that great quarterbacks win world championships. However, on the other hand, the numbers don't lie. He accomplished what he accomplished.

Another Sad Day At West Point
This is not the way that God intended it to be. Last year, 6 same-sex couples had their wedding ceremonies held at the United States Military Academy at West Point. I have written about it before. They were all women. How very sad. To add to the spiritual/moral corruption of our great nation, on Saturday November 2, 2013, West Point hosted the first wedding ceremony in its history, of two men. This represents to me, the vindication and legitimization of debauchery by our government and one of its greatest institutions of higher learning. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. I do not know why I take something like this with so much grief. Maybe it is because I hold the military to a higher standard. Satchel Paige
Satchel Paige was born on July 7, 1906 and passed away on June 8, 1982. He was a great baseball player. He was an African-American. Since major league baseball was segregated for many years, Paige played in the professional negro leagues. Paige was the first African-American to ever pitch in the American League of MLB. I will keep my words short. There is much to say about this man. He made it to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. But there is one statistic that I do not think will ever be equaled. At the age of 42, he was a rookie in the major leagues. Why? Many knew he was great. Due to racism, he was not allowed to be a part of major league baseball. He finally got his chance. He retired at age 59.
Thank A Veteran
The people who live in this world will never reach perfection here. The governments of this world cannot possibly reach perfection. They can try and try and try, but it will not happen. I could easily turn this post into a sermon or a Bible study. But I will not at this time. I will keep my words short. I do not know every human being on this planet. But I know this: I refuse to hate a single one. You may think that my words are not coinciding with the title of this blog post. They will. Any society of people must have a government. Every normal human being cherishes freedom. Every normal human being desires to pursue his or her destiny. They all need to survive. They all need to be taught. They all need to be given an opportunity. They all need their freedom. Some, because of poor choices, will lose their freedom. Due to the fact that nations cannot survive without a military structure in place.......in this world as we know it, I will thank an active military person. I will thank a veteran. Although I am a veteran, I am not some sort of "gung ho" military guy. I did my time. It was not glorious. I did not go to war........but I did my time. Veterans Day is coming up in a few days. I want to thank all of those who serve. I want to thank all of those who served. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I thank military and ex military persons just about every chance I get. For me, it does not need to be a holiday. I appreciate them.

Matthew Cordle's Incomplete Promise
In a Columbus, Ohio courtroom, Matthew Cordle was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison. He is the young man who gave an online video confession that he had killed a man in a drunken-driving crash. The judge also fined Cordle $1,075 and revoked his driving privileges for life. Cordle promised never to drink and drive. It was an incomplete promise. I think that it was the wrong promise. The promise should be: "I will never drink again." Why do I say that? Because drinking and driving is not his problem. Drinking is. Drinking caused him to do things he should have never done. Drinking is dangerous for him and others. Driving a vehicle while he is intoxicated is just one of the dangerous things he can do. There are many others. He needs to never drink again.
A Fool
"The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable (vile) works, there is none that does good." (Ps. 14:1) We have been counseled by Jesus Christ not to call someone a fool. So I do not call anyone by that name. (Matt: 5:22) This does not mean that fools are not around us. We deal with them. They have a tendency to criticize, gripe, and condemn. Is being a fool a choice? Yes. Can they stop being fools? Yes. But I also think that it can be difficult for some fools to change. They can start by believing in God. They need to be taught. They need to be willing to learn. In the Hebrew tongue, a "fool" is someone who is morally deficient or devoid of morality. Apparently the "vile works" are too overpowering and desirable, and the unwillingness to give them up is far too great. One last thing: Is it possible to be a fool, and still believe in God? I have two answers to that question. They are related. In the movie entitled "Forrest Gump," the main character said: "Stupid is as stupid does." Jesus said something similar, but did not sound as cruel. "You shall know them by their fruits." Also, there is a difference between believing that there is a God, believing in God, and being a child of God.

God does not make mistakes. Recently a high ranking gang leader was ambushed and shot to death. That man was responsible for the deaths of many. He met his fate due to the fact that he made choices that created his fate. God does not make mistakes. If he says something is true.......then it is true. In three different Gospels: Matthew (26:52) Luke (22:50) and John (18:10), when Jesus was about to be arrested, Peter, (the impulsive disciple) pulled out his sword and cut off the right ear of of the servant of the high priest. The servant's name was Malchus. Although the three accounts vary, several things in particular remain in my memory. The first is that Jesus healed the servants ear, the second is that Jesus told Peter to put his sword away. But the words that ring out through the centuries are "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword." I sometimes think of men who like to murder people.......... for whatever the reason. I can guarantee that if a person continues to live that kind of life. He will end up with the same results that he caused in others. "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword." I am not saying that it brings God joy. I am just saying that this is the way it is.

I write this because there are those who have accused Abraham Lincoln of being an atheist. Lincoln, an atheist? How ridiculous can you get. How could it be overrated? How could it be overrated when life itself comes from it. Love is the source of life and life is the source of love. Love makes one alive. Love keeps one alive. Love is the purpose for living. It is not just for "show," but you show your love when you show your kindness. You show your love when you show your patience. You show your love when you share your time. You show your love when you work, help, consider, listen, guide, sustain, nurture, instruct, protect, sacrifice, wait, support and even more. At times, love may be embarrassing, but others may say; "No, love is never embarrassing." Does love hurt? Maybe. Love is so powerful that it travels to areas we may not understand. If anything, love is underrated. Love can be misunderstood and possibly abused, but no..........Love is not overrated.

Chargers VS Raiders 1961
It was September 17, 1961, just a couple of months before my 18th birthday. It was the first year the Charger professional football team resided in San Diego. What a year it was! In San Diego's Balboa Stadium, it was the San Diego Charger's debut. It was against the Oakland Raiders. What a game it was! The Chargers looked great against the Raiders. Bo Roberson and Charlie Flowers scored two touchdowns each for the Chargers. The Chargers were great on defense as well. The Chargers won 44 to 0. What a game it was!

In A Free Society
Sometimes, there is a difference between obeying God and obeying the law. Government is more concerned that the citizenry obey the laws and not necessarily obey God. I understand the quote below. However, in a sense, it is incomplete, because it fails to deal with the teachings of morality. It is incomplete because it ignores the fact that one can deeply hurt others without threatening them, or infringing on their rights or property. In the privacy of one's home, is it acceptable to lie to someone? Is it acceptable to spread malicious rumors? No to both questions. It is unacceptable to God. The government does not even know about it. This is because the government is not holy. It is not omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and eternal. However, I will give government its due. Mainly because the Word of God tells me to do so.

Faith Is Rewarded
It has been said that faith is faith and logic is logic. Okay. Sometimes it is difficult to argue matters of faith. Sometimes it is not. To desire good things seems so normal and natural to me. To desire good health, friendship, a good job, a happy marriage, and basically a good life seems normal and natural to me. Nevertheless, there are many confused people out there. They are perhaps, not sure of what they want. Some have faith in things that do not reward. This is due to confusion and ignorance. In the final analysis: Why bother with faith if it does not reward? There is very, very much to say about this, but I will keep it short. God is the rewarder of the faithful. For Want Of A Nail And Some Hip Pads

Recently, a High school football team lost a game by two points. The reason? Some of the players chose not to bring their hip pads because they traveled to an area that is known for its hot weather. They were penalized. Those players who were without pads, came out of the game, and subs took their places. While the subs were in, and the starters putting on the hip pads borrowed from their team mates, the opposing team, which was losing by 12 points, scored two touchdowns. With the extra points kicked, they scored 14 points. This was enough to defeat their opponent. This was kind of sad for the losers, considering that they thought for sure that victory was theirs. Sometimes the seemingly minor things are not so minor.

Ariel Castro
On August 1, 2013, Ariel Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years after pleading guilty to 937 counts, including kidnapping and rape. He pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. His words to the judge: "I'm not a monster. I'm sick."
On Tuesday, September 3rd, Castro was found in his cell, hanging from a bedsheet. He had committed suicide. It was a choice that he made. He probably could not envision spending the rest of his life in prison. Particularly for the crimes he had committed. This type of criminal is not usually respected by other convicts. I am thinking he knew his life would be miserable. Maybe he thought he could be sent to a mental institution where he could be on "permanent vacation." I don't know. On the other hand, had he been a "cop killer," he may have been considered a "hero" by the other convicts. I can only speculate. Lastly, the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, Christine Link, called for a "full investigation." My question: What for? I am not a cold-blooded person. There was hope for Castro. Jesus said: "Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly at heart and you shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matt. 11:28) On the other hand, the yoke that Satan puts on people is not at all easy, and his burden is heavy, heavy, heavy. The future of Ariel Castro is now in God's hands.

When the Constitution of the United States was written, the authority over the military was placed in civilian hands. This has not always been a popular idea. Nevertheless it has been beneficial to the nation. This has always been an issue that all countries have had to deal with. There is much to say about this, but I will simplify things.
Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution states that "Congress shall have the power to raise and support Armies, and to provide and maintain a Navy."
Article II, Section 2 states, "The President shall be the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States."
The President and the Congress have always had to work together to use the military.

It is a poor substitute for the real deal. What is the "real deal"? Jesus Christ is. His teachings teach peace. The "religious" of His day had a great deal to do with his execution by crucifixion. Nevertheless, He taught forgiveness. "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you." (Matt. 5:44) Do those sound like the words of a warmonger? Read all of chapter 5. Jesus is the "Prince of Peace." His Word declares it. I also speak from personal experience.
On the other hand, what if the government of the nation of which I am a citizen, and enjoy the benefits thereof, asks me to take up arms and go to war? Well.......that is a separate issue......with resolutions.

Bradley Manning
Bradley Manning is a United States Army soldier who was court-martialed for sending classified information to WikiLeaks. To complicate matters even more, he wants to be a woman. Well.........he is 29 years too late. That decision was made for him on the day he was born. ( on the day he was conceived? That way of saying it is okay too.) Bradley Manning (not formerly Bradley Manning) is serving a 35-year sentence at Fort Leavenworth Kansas for HIS conviction of disclosing information. Like I said: It is too late for him to become a woman. His gender was decided a long time ago.

Freedom is very difficult to maintain. However, it has its benefits. Those who practice certain freedoms are often at odds with those who disagree with them. Is this so bad? No. But the problem occurs that those who practice certain freedoms want to deny freedoms to those who disagree and want to practice their freedoms. "I'm not hurting anybody," he declares. On Liberty
I am thoroughly convinced that liberty is of major importance. But I am also thoroughly convinced that it is difficult to maintain. Without a doubt, liberty requires an ordered society because liberty can be one step away from chaos and anarchy if society is not well-ordered. I love liberty. Liberty has made this country great. Sweet September
The following short poem was sent to me just yesterday from a former classmate at SUHI. Her name is Linda Henderson. Every first Tuesday of the month, Sweetwater High School graduates from the class of 1960 meet at Mike and Joe's Pizza House to socialize and reminisce. Toward the end of every month, Linda sends us all an email reminder, (bless her heart). I kind of like this poem because September is special to me.......mainly because it marks the beginning of football season. I suspect Linda "tweaked in" "pizza with friends in sweet September." Thanks, Linda. Please know you are appreciated.

Pursuing Self Interest
Pursuing your own self-interest does not necessarily mean that your intentions are to harm others. It does not necessarily equate with being cruel or irrational. Logically speaking, harming others does not benefit a person. An exception to this concept may exist in the world of politics to a degree, but only to a degree.
Power Surge
He insulted people for the the purpose of expressing his power. He disagreed to show how powerful he was intellectually. The self perception of his own greatness caused a power surge. It blew up in his face. The electricity of his personality was burned out. He lost face because he tried to destroy face. He expressed a red face because he was unable to face others without a face of reason. He had to be right. It was not possible. He thought he was a legend. Yes, he was, in his own mind only. He had a power surge. The electrical circuit of his presence experienced a quick spike in voltage. It caused a disturbance in power. I have two words of advice for him. Two words only..........try humility. Those two words represent what is called by me: "A power surge protector."

Work Out That Relationship
Work it out because it is worth saving. Do not let your weakness rule. Be strong enough to take it. Do not be a toddler who is angered because he doesn't get his way. You do not need to win every argument. Is it about winning arguments or arriving at a place of peace? Yes indeed, "love conquers all!" It always has. It always will. Work it out. Yes, work it out.

Six Very Important Words
Without freedom, how can you pursue your goals? Happiness? Dreams and aspirations? Without freedom, how can you unleash your potential? What about injustice? People demand justice. And it is well that they should. However, justice is best practiced by individuals. When it directs the lifestyles of persons, their attitudes and choices, it contributes to peace and harmony. Justice is defended by law, but it is not confined to matters of law. How about honor? When we honor we respect. We give things, people, positions, government, family, God, friends, associates, and humanity their just due. We honor because we appreciate and are grateful. As people, do we not have duties? Do we not have responsibilities? Can we not contribute to help make a better society? Does not everyone make mistakes? Shall we not forgive? Shall we not be forgiven then? A great teacher has said: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." What about the future? Can we not hope for something better? Can we not dream, plan, execute and hope?

All I Ask Of Filner
For a long, long time I have considered politics to be real dirty business. I think it has the capacity to ruin good men and women. Government is necessary, therefore politics is necessary. Simply stated: politics is the struggle for power. Perhaps that is too simple of a statement. Perhaps not. I shall get to my point. Many of the citizens of the City of San Diego want the current Mayor, Bob Filner , to resign. He has been accused of sexual harassment by 13 women. He has been accused of being a bully and of being extremely difficult to work for. Some of his staff have resigned. As of this writing, 77% of people polled want Filner to resign from his position as Mayor of San Diego. I only ask Bob Filner to do one thing. Do what is best for San Diego. Please do not be an enemy of San Diego. Please do not create a situation that will cost the city of San Diego millions and millions of dollars. Please do not harm the future of San Diego. Please do not harm the business of San Diego. Please do not harm the residents of San Diego. Please do not harm the environment of San Diego. Do no harm. Maybe it sounds naive on my part. I am still an idealist. I believe government leaders are servants of the people. They are not autocrats. They are not monarchs. They are servants, public servants. Mr. Filner.......do the City no harm. That is all I ask.

Gizelle Studevent Bounces Back
My thanks to the San Diego Union for the excellent, and inspiring article about a young lady who was bullied in high school. Her name is Gizelle Studevent. The bullying took place via nasty, abusive, racist, (she is half Mexican) and extremely demeaning notes and letters. The tormenter was anonymous and relentless. Part of the problem was that Gizelle was an outstanding basketball player. To make a long story short, Gizelle worked harder and harder at her sport, and guess what? She earned a scholarship to Penn State. She has done very well there. This story reminds me of the old saying: "Success is the best revenge." To date, Gizelle does not know the identity of her tormenter. She was asked an interesting question: "What would you say to the person who bullied you in school?" She answered..........."Thanks."

Legal Illegal Plunder
It has been said that "taxation is the price we pay to live in a civilized society." I tend to agree with that statement. Government is necessary, and government needs power in order to function properly. It also needs revenue. The two main questions then will continue to be asked: How much? And, What for? All institutions of society have faults. All need to improve. Government is no exception.

The Last American Bayonet Charge
This is a piece of US military history. Perhaps some would just consider it trivia. I do not. Lewis L Millet fought in 3 American wars, which were WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Lewis L. Millet was a brave soldier. He eventually reached the rank of Colonel. Although he distinguished himself with many awards, he is most well known for leading the last bayonet charge ever conducted by American troops. It was very successful. For this he earned the highest award given in combat to an American military person.........The Congressional Medal of Honor. They also renamed the hill where it took place to "Bayonet Hill."

Lewis Lee Millett Sr. (December 15, 1920 – November 14, 2009) was a United States Army officer who received the Medal of Honor during the Korean War for leading the last major American bayonet charge.
He enlisted into the National Guard while still in high school and then in 1940 joined the United States Army Air Corps. When he thought that the United States would not participate in World War II he deserted and went to Canada with a friend where they joined the military and were sent to London. The U.S. did enter the war and by the time he made it to Europe they were in the fight so he transferred to the U.S. Army. While serving with the Army in World War II, he received a Silver Star for driving a burning ammunition truck away from a group of soldiers, before it exploded.
During the Korean War, he was awarded the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. The citation explains that he lead a bayonet charge against the enemy. He later served in the Vietnam War as well. He retired from the Army in 1973 and died of congestive heart failure in 2009.
