Freedom's Course

I have talked about this before, but I continue with the theme because I feel so strongly about it. I believe that freedom (or liberty) is the greatest gift a government/nation/society or culture can give to it's people. I believe government has the capacity to diminish creativity, productivity and prosperity. Government has the capacity of getting so immense that it has too many employees with not much to do. They then start their jobs as hard-core bureaucrats. Their leaders may then try to find them "something to do." That "something to do" may involve the need for the citizen to go to an interview, or a meeting, get a permit, pay some fees, wait for an environmental impact report, get some signatures, talk to another "representative" of the department, and the list goes on. All of this can impact productivity. Our society is not set up this way. Our society is set up to enable freedom to take it's course.

Greed And Need

Maybe certain definitions of words do not change as rapidly as we think they do. Needs do not really change. Perhaps the ways of satisfying them, do change. Often as a result of the involvement of government. Below is an interesting quote by the late Joseph Sobran. He was a columnist and former editor of National Review. His insight was worthy. RD

"In the current political vocabulary, ‘need’ means wanting to get someone else’s money. ‘Greed,’ which used to mean what “need” now means, has come to mean wanting to keep your own. ‘Compassion’ means the politician’s willingness to arrange the transfer."

When Governments Fear The People

I do not want the government under which I live, to be tyrannical. I want to be free. I want to be free to live as I choose. I know government is necessary. I know we have laws. I choose to obey them. They are there for a purpose. I know government has corruption. I just do not want the corruption to affect me directly, in a negative way. Maybe that sounds too idealistic. Nevertheless, I want to be free. And I think Thomas Jefferson agreed with me. Or, maybe I should say I agree with him. Incidentally, I do not own firearms. However, I am very pro-Second Amendment. I have my reasons. RD

"When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson

Another Quote By Patrick Henry

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here."
Patrick Henry
