"The Happiness and Prosperity of Our Citizens"

I know that it sounds idealistic, perhaps even unrealistic, but I agree 100% with Thomas Jefferson's quote regarding the purpose of government. Does the government exist to tax the citizenry unfairly? Does the government exist in order to go to war and subjugate other nations? Does the government exist so that its' leaders can make arbitrary decisions, inconvenience many and benefit a few? Does the government exist to make its' leaders rich? A resounding no to all of those questions. We live in an imperfect world with imperfect people, but that does not mean that we need to tolerate wrong doing, unethical conduct, and blatant violation of laws by anybody. We need to continue to "fight the good fight" and pursue the "object of government."

"The happiness and prosperity of our citizens is the only legitimate object of government."
-- Thomas Jefferson
(1743-1826), US Founding Father, drafted the Declaration of Independence, 3rd US President
